Kirsty Lowe

Romanian, Italian, French and Spanish to English translator

General Medical, Real Estate, General Translator

Based in Northamptonshire, UK

LinkedIn and Love Languages

As of today I am relaunching “Meet the Translator Mondays”, where kind, well-established colleagues volunteer to share their thoughts, tips and personal experience with fledging counterparts.

I shall start the ball rolling with an exercise in egocentricity: by interviewing myself! With the proviso that, despite having worked in translation on and off for several decades, I do not (yet) consider myself a fully established translator in today’s fast-paced industry.

Could you start by telling us about your language combinations?

How did you learn your source languages?

What are your specialisms, and why?

When did you decide to become a translator, and why?

What CPD activities do you undertake?

How do you market yourself?

How would you like your career to develop over the next five years?

Do you have any Dos or Don’t for new translators?

What are your impressions of the industry as it is today?

What would you do if you were not a translator?

God that was hard! I will definitely have more sympathy for my interviewees in future.

So please, if you feel up to revisiting the whys and wherefores of your career in order to both assist newbies and offer my readers a taste of your skillset, please contact me via LinkedIn. Thank you!

  1. Enjoyed reading that Kirsty! A very enjoyable snapshot of your very existence and I’m definitely of the same mindset when it comes to AI – why should us humans have to adapt our creativity to meet the needs of bloody robots! We should all be digging our heels in and fighting back!

    1. Hello Chris! Lovely to see you on here. Bloody bloody robots indeed. I have been sent this link to respond to a government (UK) consultation on AI and copyright: https://www.alcs.co.uk/news/your-rights-are-under-threat-from-ai-its-time-to-have-your-say/?utm_source=Authors%27%20Licensing%20%26%20Collecting%20Society%20Ltd&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=14867680_AI%20consultationn&dm_i=76%2C8UNZ4%2C7J19IC%2C10UOUY%2C1&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR1dYlg4DuxQRFPZVvGJwlB310kTtaET21SIRBkmzknqlmweEQF_mxTLWhk_aem__1fY9qZK8CxCO71IBru8lw

      Hopefully it will post here.

It is beyond depressing that Starmer hopes to make the UK an AI hub. Now if AI would actually do something useful like take the bins out, scrub a toilet bowl or do the ironing, I could perhaps get on board. What on earth is the point of training it to write novels, “create” art and take over the translation industry? Is it to free us up to scrub toilet bowls, perhaps? Humans just can’t help being the architects of their own downfall.

And on that cheerful note… toodle pip!

      1. Yeah that’s a good point. Why can’t we get it to cook and clean for us and take us out for a night on the tiles if we can’t get a date! Yes, you’re right, humans do tend to muck it up for themselves. Things like communism and buddhism are great ideas until you get humans involved who just can’t help to completely arse it all up.

  4. Hello Kirsty!

Lovely to see this website! Being a translator myself—both by education and during my first few years of active work after university, which I truly enjoyed—it’s fantastic to see such a professional, vibrant, and multifaceted colleague.

Wishing you the best of luck with all your start-ups and ideas!
